History of the Leclerc Passage

Located in the heart of Getsemaní, between Calle del Arsenal and Calle Larga, Pasaje Leclerc is one of the living witnesses to Cartagena's commercial and architectural evolution.

Built in 1928, this passageway is a representative work of the Republican style that dominated the architecture of the time, characterized by ornamental details and mixed functionality: shops on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors.

During its early years, Pasaje Leclerc housed a vibrant network of small businesses: soap shops, lotions, stores selling everyday items, ointments, school supplies, and other essential products for the inhabitants of Cartagena.

One of the most notable aspects of its history is that its second floor was home to many of the same people who worked there; merchants who lived in rooms above their shops. This made it an urban space where work and family life shared the same roof.

Over time, although commercial activity declined, Pasaje Leclerc has managed to preserve its original structure, becoming a symbolic space of Getsemaní's past. Many remember it as the city's “first Sanandresito” because of the variety of popular shops it housed.

Today, its value lies not only in its material aspects, but also in its cultural significance: its walls evoke memories of everyday life, of neighborhood community, of merchants who shared their daily lives, of a growing Getsemaní that transitioned between residential and commercial areas.
